Human rights and human dignity
J.R. Howell’s human rights advocacy focuses on combating child trafficking, ending modern forms of slavery and advancing Indigenous rights, including advocacy concerning Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. His work seeks to protect Indigenous women, children and families and support their ability to seek accountability when their rights are violated.
Indigenous women and families
As counsel for Indigenous families and human rights defenders, Howell prepared a complaint addressed to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It concerns the treatment of murdered Indigenous women and their families in Manitoba, respect for Indigenous cultural rights and the protection of peaceful advocacy.
Child trafficking and exploitation
He also authored a research-based submission addressed to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. Drawing on research across the Americas, it examines how gaps in identification and protection can leave Indigenous children exposed to trafficking and exploitation.
Dignity and family life
His writing on birth alerts and family separation examines the experiences of Indigenous mothers and children and the consequences of state intervention in family life.
Across this work, respect for human dignity requires protection of family and cultural ties, access to assistance and meaningful remedies.
